Update the agent¶
TL;DR
Device page → Update agent → Update. Or on the device: sudo kinuxota update.
From version 2.0.0 the agent updates through apt, from the same signed repository it was installed
from (https://apt.kinuxota.com). There is no other download path. An update keeps the device's
enrollment, its settings and the results it has not sent yet.
Devices installed with an agent older than 2.0.0 cannot update this way: reinstall them once (see Devices from before 2.0.0: reinstall once).
From the dashboard¶
Open the device and click Update agent. The dialog shows the version the device runs and lets you pick a version: Latest release, or one of the versions in the repository (a lower version is allowed). Click Update.
The device refreshes the KinuxOTA repository, installs the version with apt and restarts the agent. The dialog follows the update and shows Updated to with the new version, which the restarted agent reports. If the device already runs that version, it says so and installs nothing.
A remote update needs systemd on the device (every supported distribution has it). Once started, an update cannot be cancelled.
On the device¶
sudo kinuxota update # the latest version
sudo kinuxota update --version 2.0.1 # a given version (a downgrade is allowed)
kinuxota update refreshes only the KinuxOTA source and runs
apt-get install --only-upgrade kinuxota (or kinuxota=<version>). One update runs at a time: if
an update from the dashboard is in progress, kinuxota update says so and stops.
With apt¶
The agent is a normal package, so the usual apt commands also update it, for example in your own maintenance scripts:
When the service requires a newer agent¶
If KinuxOTA stops accepting an agent version (for example after a security fix), the server answers that agent with "upgrade required". The agent then updates itself to the latest version through apt, at most once an hour, and keeps every result it could not send until it is up to date.
Messages¶
The dashboard shows the result the agent reports; kinuxota update prints the same reasons.
| Message | Meaning |
|---|---|
Updated from A to B |
The update worked; the restarted agent reports version B. |
Already running A |
The device has that version already; nothing was installed. |
Update failed: version X is not in the repository |
Pick a version from the Update agent list. |
Update failed: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/kinuxota.sources is missing; reinstall the kinuxota package |
The repository was removed from the device. Run the installer or the apt commands again (below). |
Update failed: refreshing the KinuxOTA apt source failed: ... |
The device cannot reach https://apt.kinuxota.com: check its network and proxy. |
Remote update needs systemd, which this device does not have. Update it on the device: sudo kinuxota update |
Run sudo kinuxota update on the device. |
kinuxota update: a remote update is being installed (...); try again when it has finished |
An update from the dashboard is running. |
The installer and the apt commands are on Install the agent; running them again keeps the enrollment.
See which version a device runs¶
The Devices list shows each device's Platform and Agent Version; so does the device page. On the
device, run kinuxota version.
