Devices from before 2.0.0: reinstall once

Agent 2.0.0 is the first version on the KinuxOTA apt repository. Agents older than 2.0.0 were downloaded from GitHub. They do not send their version to the server and cannot update through apt, so Update agent cannot bring them to 2.0.0.

Reinstall each device that runs an agent older than 2.0.0, once

After that, the device updates itself to every later version through apt (see Update the agent). It never needs a reinstall again.

Which devices

The Devices list shows each device's Agent Version. On the device, kinuxota version prints it. Every device below 2.0.0 needs the reinstall.

Reinstall a device

  1. Get the device's API key. You can keep the device in the dashboard, with its history, if you reuse its key. An agent from 1.2 to 1.4 keeps it on the device:
sudo grep '"apiKey"' /etc/kinuxota/config.json

If the file is not there (an older agent) or you no longer want the old device entry, delete the device in the dashboard, click Add device again and use the new key.

  1. Run the installer on the device, with the key:
curl -fsSL https://www.kinuxota.com/install.sh | sudo sh -s -- --key <API_KEY>

Or use the apt commands of Install the agent. The new package replaces the old one and removes the files of the old script-based agent (/usr/local/bin/kinuxota_client and its helpers, /etc/sudoers.d/kinuxota).

  1. Check it. kinuxota version prints 2.0.0 or later, and the device shows as Online with that Agent Version in the dashboard.

What changes for the device

  • Updates come from https://apt.kinuxota.com, signed with the key in /usr/share/keyrings/kinuxota.gpg. The device needs outbound HTTPS to that host.
  • The agent is the systemd service kinuxota and the program /usr/bin/kinuxota, as before.
  • Commands, scripts and package operations from the dashboard work as before.
